What if we told you America is killing us…would you help?
When more than half of Black adults have experienced mistreatment at the hands of a doctor, and a quarter avoid seeking care altogether, the healthcare system isn’t failing Black America by accident. Diagnosing Healthcare traces that failure from its roots: from the Tuskegee syphilis study, where 128 men were denied a cure while the government watched them die, to J. Marion Sims operating on enslaved young women without anesthesia. In the present, Black women die in childbirth at three to four times the rate of white women and Black infants die at rates 95% above the national average.
Through the voices of patients, physicians, and advocates, this film confronts our mistreatment, our mistrust, and our Black fatigue. It calls us forward. Through the journey of Sankofa, we build our village. Through our village, we rebuild our systems.
