This album features a group from the Malayan community of the Hindu faith who practice Theyyam, a traditional folk art in Kerala. Perumalayan,is a video album themed on the lives, beliefs, purity and dedication of the Kanaladi’s (Theyyam dance performer),. It is a time when various Theyyam forms are performed as part of the rituals, practices, beliefs and traditions in hundreds of villages in North Kerala. Perumalayan is also a theme that depicts the life experiences of Theyyam artists beyond mere disguise, crowds and noise. The theme of Perumalayan is the dedication and performance of a little boy who became a Kanaladi at a young age, despite the difficulties, when his Kanaladi father died prematurely. Unlike other Theyyams, Gulikan Theyyam, which takes its steps with the Chenda Melam (Traditional Kerala Percussion Ensemble) in the midst of the noise of thousands, is also the completion of training and dedication beyond faith. The sanctity and personal lives of the Kanaladis are beautifully conveyed to the readers through a five-minute video album.
In an era when there is an allegation that the Theyyattam and the Koladhari (Theyyam dance performer) are deviating from faith and customs in the changed life situation, the Perumalayan album is an embodiment of the faith that has been strengthened.
