How many recipes are there in the world? There are foods that represent the country, there are foods that symbolize culture, and there are foods that remind you of the region. Every house has its own food to be proud of. The recipes that create special foods are like countless stars in the universe. Being born and disappearing is perhaps a natural process. The process of how food is made tells a lot more than we think.

‘Grandma Recipe’ is a short documentary about the process of rebirth of Tteokbokki, a representative Korean food kept by a 92-year-old rural grandmother, with three young life style planners called ‘Local creators’. Although we are living in the age of 100, there is a recipe that shares the life and lifespan of a grandmother.

Shin Hae-in, a 92-year-old grandmother who appears in the documentary, provided a recipe for garlic Tteokbokki that she made for her three young children. Garlic, a staple in Korean traditional food, is surprisingly unusual because it is not often used in Korean traditional street food, Tteokbokki.

‘Grandma Recipe’ challenges the development of a unique menu in Korea, where there are many types of Tteokbokki. The three participating young people are entrepreneurs who create a business model based on the value of a region called ‘local creator’. They each have the titles of an agricultural expert, a cultural planner, and a cooking expert, and they have come together to bring out a different kind of food to the world by demonstrating their abilities in the ‘Grandma Recipe’ project.

The ‘Grandma Recipe’ project, which three young entrepreneurs collaborated with in support of Shin Hae-in’s lively life in old age, will be made into a meal kit. I smile when I imagine the moment when the story of my grandmother’s life is put on the public table.
