Film Description:

Lucy and Yulia are two physically disabled actresses determined to perform in professional mainstream, German repertoire theatre. BREAKTHROUGH STAGE documents the trials
and tribulations, the obstacles and successes of Lucy and Yulia as they begin their careers performing on the German theatre stage. The film follows Lucy as she joins the Munich municipal Kammer Theatre Company and begins rehearsals. The film focuses on Yulia as she auditions for, and is accepted into the unique, recently established, professional actor-training program for the disabled run by the Wuppertal Theatre Company.
BREAKTHROUGH STAGE is not only about two talented and determined actresses of disability. Lucy and Yulia’s determination, energy, and courage project across the stage
and screen, impacting many levels of social perception. Their successful entry into professional German theatre makes a profound statement countering the accepted norms of a world in which fashion, profit, and sexism dictate the aesthetics of the feminine body. Lucy and Yulia embody within themselves an
otherness relating to issues of womanhood, body, sexuality, gender, aesthetics, professionalism, and performance. By assuming a role on the German theater stage, Lucy and Yulia not only assert their own unequivocal right to an equal role in society, but also that of all persons of disability. Lucy and Yulia are icons of alternative possibilities in contemporary society.
